Take the Bathers Way
Make Newcastle’s coastal route the main event, with time for a swim, a meal or a long look at the ocean.
A flexible plan
Start at Merewether
The official guide begins at Merewether Ocean Baths. Check conditions if you plan to swim.
Walk at your own pace
Follow the waterfront towards Nobbys Beach, leaving time for breaks and viewpoints.
Pause for food
Pick a stop that suits your timing and check its current opening hours before travelling.
Get back
The 6 km distance is one way. Decide on your return transport or a shorter turnaround in advance.
Before you go
6–under 12 km · 6 km one way. Start: Merewether Ocean Baths. Finish: Nobbys Beach / Macquarie Pier.
Grade 2 · some steeper gradients (Visit Newcastle). About 3 hours walking; allow extra time for stops.
Wheelchair access not yet verified for the full route. Check sections, boarding, surfaces and facilities with the operator where relevant.
Allow for your transport and meal. Check venue hours and prices before you go.
Visit Newcastle describes a paved Grade 2 route with some steeper gradients. Paving and grade alone do not establish wheelchair suitability. Choose a section if the full one-way walk is too much.
Where to start
Merewether Ocean Baths. The pin marks the starting landmark, not a full route.
Check the official venue or route map and return transport separately.
Nico’s take
Let the coastline set the pace. A shorter section can make just as satisfying an outing if the full one-way walk does not suit your day.
